Rob Cross Vs Michael van Gerwen

Rob Cross looking like a favourable outsider against Michael van Gerwen

It’s another massive crunch match on Thursday evening as likable underdog Rob Cross faces man of the moment Michael van Gerwen in the Unibet Premier League. Darts is an intense sport that’s bursting with passion and excitement, and no meeting comes much more crucial than this one, as a divide in fans predicts every outcome as being possible.

Through the excessive coverage of football, we don’t see quite so much of darts but Odds Changer are a website who make time for all major sports, even going as far as running a specially made section of their website devoted exclusively to darts betting tips, previews and odds.

There’s a few matchups on Thursday that make it a worthwhile night of darts with Peter Wright facing Simon Whitlock, Daryl Gurney hosting Michael Smith and Gary Anderson locking horns with Raymond van Barneveld. They are exciting meetings but it’s hard to see any of them as being anything compared to the David and Goliath tie between Rob Cross and Michael van Gerwen.

Rob Cross v Michael van Gerwen is Round 14’s biggest encounter

Rob Cross PDC World ChampionAfter bursting onto the scene a few years back, Michael van Gerwen has gradually earned his place amongst the legends, now ranked number 1 as the world’s very best. The eventual retirement of Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor obviously contributed to that, but van Gerwen was in fine form before Taylor stood down from professional darts.

Something that was proven during Phil Taylor’s final game was that Rob Cross should be given more respect as a professional player, as he was the one who tarnished Taylor’s final appearance, beating him 7-2 to be crowned PDC World Darts Championship winner. Although some of the top darts players might not rate Cross too highly, fans of the sport clearly do, as there’s been so many backing him to defeat van Gerwen in their upcoming meeting.

What the bookmakers say

The odds currently see Michael van Gerwen as a clear favourite, with odds only going as high as 8/15 even with the most generous of bookmakers. Despite being given odds as high as 5/1 to defeat his Dutch adversary, Rob Cross is being backed by a large portion of punters, with some bookies even quoting a whopping 100% of their customers backing him over a draw or a win for Michael van Gerwen. Meanwhile, a draw, which could be an arguably worthwhile compromise, is priced up at odds of 9/2.

Considering how he thrashed Michael Smith 7-1 in his last game, Michael van Gerwen couldn’t go into this meeting in much stronger form. Rob Cross could only manage a 6-6 draw with Raymond van Barneveld but based on his ability to significantly overcome Phil Taylor at the start of 2018, he could be geared up for another against-the-odds shock here.
