Women's darts have come a long way in the past thirty years. With little sponsorship and support, the women's game is only now starting to be recognised. Pioneering the way were several top-class lady darters, the best of all Trina Gulliver MBE.
During the years when the British Darts Organisation ran the elite dart circuit, Trina Gulliver was always the lady to beat. These days Fallon Sherrock and Beau Greaves are the names female dart players mentioned. Fallon made her name by winning two rounds at the PDC World Darts Championships, which gave women's darts the shot in the arm it needed. Following on, the PDC introduced the Women's Series and a PDC World Matchplay event. In March 2023, Fallon hit the first dart-dart leg by a woman in the PDC Winmau Challenge Tour.
Beau Greaves, the first WDF Womens World Championship winner, also booked her place in the PDC World Darts Championships 2023 by competing in the PDC Women's Series. The two young ladies are making darts compelling to watch. However, dart fans have been treated before to high-quality women's darts in the past, from Francis Hoenselar, Deta Hedman, Lisa Ashton, Anastasia Dobromyslova, Mikuru Suzuki and the best of the best Trina Gulliver MBE.
During the twenty years the BDO managed the Women's World Darts Championship, Trina won the event ten times and was runner-up a further two. Phil Taylor is the only dart player to have won more World Dart Titles than Trina.
Trina was honoured with an MBE for her services to the sport of darts and her charity work. She is the only female player to have received such an award and only one of three players to have ever received the award. The late Eric Bristow and John Lowe are the other two who have been honoured.
The tribute video above showcases Trina's talent, high scoring, big checkouts and many of her wins on the oche. Trina is still regarded as one of the best female players and regularly competes on the World Senior Darts Tour, the PDC Womens Series, Modus Super League of Darts Series and some of the WDF ranking events.
At the World Senior Darts Tour – Champion of Champions event at the Viva Blackpool on 25 March 2023, Trina was reunited with the BDO Women's World Darts Trophy.
Following the demise of the BDO, it was liquidated. The World Darts trophies were auctioned. Peter Turrell, director of LP Metal Detecting, purchased the BDO Women's World Championship Trophy and presented the trophy to Trina for her to keep for as long as she wished. This a very kind gesture from the sponsor of LP Metal Detecting
